On 23rd October, Oxford STEM Founders hosted an engaging panel discussion at St Catherine’s College on “Challenges & Opportunities Unique to STEM Startups.”

The session brought together three perspectives central to the deep-tech venture journey:

  • Andrew Straiton (Oxford Science Enterprises) offered the investor perspective, outlining how VCs evaluate technical ventures, what builds founder credibility, and the early milestones that meaningfully influence funding decisions.

  • Kate Carruthers (Mode Labs) provided an operations-focused viewpoint, emphasising the critical role of organisational structure, process design, and operational leadership—areas often overlooked but essential for sustainable scaling.

  • Pascal Kaienburg (TerraChange Solar) shared the scientist-to-entrepreneur journey, highlighting the challenges of translating research into commercially viable solutions and the persistence required to navigate technical and market uncertainties.

The event brought together founders, researchers, and students from across the University, demonstrating strong interest in the intersection of science and entrepreneurship. The discussions and networking reinforced the importance of community in supporting STEM innovators.

We extend our thanks to the speakers and all attendees for making our launch event a success.
